Sea battle

Sea battle is the first thing which regular soviet schoolboy thinks about. The most popular soviet game machine was made in few modifications which had slightly different coloring of the body and some structural differences.
The most complex parts of machine were sound-effects card and step-generator which controlled the speed of torpedo. The picture visible on the screen – sea, sky and ships were actually placed on the bottom of machine (not at the front of periscope) and was reflected by corresponding mirror.

Sniper

Sniper shooting-gallery with pneumatic “IZh” rifles which had to be recharged with applying much physical efforts. They were always popular not only among children.
When “Sniper” appeared the quantity of places to do some shooting had grown significantly. It’s amazing that shooting from the electronic rifle was the same exciting as from the pneumatic one.
The sound of shot was not too loud but it was a specific part of the whole atmosphere of majority of gaming halls. |

Jumps

“Jumps” is a game machine for the most ardour players. Up to 6 persons could play at the same time and in fact it was a simulator of a real horse-race sport.
As many other soviet machines the idea of this one was taken from a foreign analogue. The prototype of “Jumps” was made by Atari company (a pioneer of video games) in the end of 70-th. To win this game your horse should jump over all barriers and finish at first place. |

Safari

A popular game machine of “Safari” had the similar simple body of painted wood as the “Jumps” machine. Obviously it was an analogue of some foreign machine. Monochrome graphics was improved by color strips on the glass in the front of the screen. The strips had split the screen on separate areas: brown ground and blue river. Player had to shoot 16 wild African animals within two minutes. Those who coped with the task had gotten a bonus game.
By the way the main difference of soviet game machines from the foreign ones was the main prize for the winner which was a possibility to play additional “bonus” game instead of high-scores. |

Gorodki (Towns)

The idea of Towns was not borrowed from foreign developers. This game machine was an originally developed in the USSR. Even the sound track was a “Kalinka Malinka”. This machine was very popular and gathered almost so many players as Sea battle did. It attracted attention of visitors by its bright orange or red body. However some boys considered this machine as girls one and didn’t play it in the company of their friends. |

Interceptor

“Interceptor” was not so popular soviet game machine. Many of those who played Sea battle and Towns even didn’t see this machine. The soviet fighter protects soviet air from the invasion of foreign aircrafts. A simple monochrome game was supported with a “real” sound of fighter engine. Joystick was a main control of the game which made playing the game more exciting. |

Air battle

Somebody remember “Air battle” game machine when talking about “Interceptor”. Air battle is in fact another machine which is not electronic but electro-mechanical. A fight between soviet and foreign aircrafts occurred inside relatively huge body of machine. Control of the game was too complex for youngest schoolboys. But the main subject of the game is simple – to press Fire in time and save Motherland. |

Highway

This game machine appeared in the second half of 80-th and was loved by many people. It has futuristic design of the body which was stand out in comparison to other machines which mainly were simple rectangular boxes.
It has attractive metallic sensor keys (to start the game and select the type of the game) – which reacted on touch (20 years before iPhone!).
Two players could play simultaneously: two steering wheels and two sets of pedals were available. Each car was visible on a separate part of the screen. Variety of tracks was available to choose from, including complex ones like “Ice” and “Night”. Only experienced players could cope with those tracks. |

Telesport

This game machine had the same body as “Highway” had, but it had joysticks instead steering wheels. Two players could play simultaneously as well.
A player could choose from variety of sport games: Tennis, Soccer, Grass hockey, Basketball. It wasn’t actually a real simulator of sport games but rather a game machine similar to Pong from the end of 70-th. But the game play was quite exciting. |

Penalty

Another popular sport game machine was “Penalty”. Actually it was something like American “pinball”. The balls were thrown away by a spring. They should be aimed to the gates. The bodies of such game machines were painted with the logos of popular soccer clubs and organizations: Spartak, Football Federation (USSR), Zenith, Dinamo, FIFA… This game machine could even give a souvenir to the luckiest player. |
